CrossFit History
CrossFit was originally started by Greg Glassman a former high school gymnast. The first Crossfit affiliate gym opened in Santa Cruz in 1995. The year that Glassman started his first affiliate was the same year that he was hired to train teh Santa Cruz police department. By the end of the 1995 Glassman had 18 Crossfit Affiliate gyms. Over the past 15 years CrossFit has grown to over 2,000 affiliates worldwide.
CrossFit Games
The CrossFit games are designed to find the world’s fittest athlete. It is the “ultimate test of fitness” a three-day competition in which athletes compete in a variety of grueling workouts. Each year the workouts change drastically, the idea is that a CrossFit athlete should be prepared for any physical fitness challenge. The workouts for the event are not unveiled until a few days before the event begins. Unlike other competitions like Strongman both men and women compete in the CrossFit games. The male and female winner of the games each received a $25,000 prize at the 2010 competition.
How To Qualify for the CrossFit Games
In 2010 the games were limited to the 50 best men in the world and the 50 best women. Each competitor needs to qualify to earn there way into the games. The top five men and women from the previous year are automatically grandfathered into the current games.
Athletes must first compete and qualify in the sectionals event, then the best athletes from sections move on to the regionals. The best of regionals move on to the games.
